Ultrasounds
You may think a positive result on a pregnancy test is all you need to know about your pregnancy, but there is so much more. You need the information that only an ultrasound can provide. We offer free state-of-the-art limited ultrasound services.
How does an ultrasound Work?
An ultrasound (sonogram) is an imaging technique that uses sound waves to produce images of the inside of your uterus.
The technician runs an instrument called a transducer through a gel-like substance placed on your abdomen. The transducer picks up the echoes of the soundwaves, which create an image on a monitor.
It’s a painless procedure that provides a lot of additional information.
Why do I need an ultrasound?
There are three essential questions that only an ultrasound can answer.
- Is your pregnancy viable (developing)? If one in four pregnancies potentially ends in a miscarriage, you’ll need an ultrasound to determine if yours is viable. A viable pregnancy has a detectable heartbeat and means you haven’t miscarried.
- How far along is your pregnancy? The date you became pregnant determines your pregnancy options. Only an ultrasound can closely determine gestational age (the length of time you’ve been pregnant).
- Where is the pregnancy located? Some pregnancies form on the outside of the uterus. A pregnancy located in the wrong place is known as an ectopic pregnancy. They are extremely dangerous and could be fatal.
